Art Museum of Estonia

Art Museum of Estonia (AME), founded in 1919, has grown into a large institution that consists of various branches: Kumu Art Museum, Kadriorg Art Museum, Niguliste Museum, Adamson-Eric Museum and Kristjan Raud House Museum.

In February 2006 Art Museum of Estonia opened the first purpose-built art museum in Estonia – Kumu, the new main building of AME – that enables permanent displays of Estonian art from the 18th century to the 1990s and organisation of temporary exhibitions of both foreign and Estonian art.

Collection that consists of approximately 56 000 items is displayed in the following branches:  

  • permanent exhibition of the classics of Estonian art (18th century – II World War), permanent exhibition of Estonian art from 1945 to 1991 and contemporary art – Kumu Art Museum;
  • ecclesiastical art from 13th –18th century; silverware of guilds, craft corporations, Brotherhood of the Black Heads and churches - Niguliste Museum;
  • European and Russian art from the period between 16th –20th century in the Kadriorg Palace, and a valuable collection of the 16th –20th c. art from Western Europe, Russia and China, donated to the museum by Johannes Mikkel, at Mikkel Museum – Kadriorg Art Museum;
  • Art by Adamson-Eric (1902–1968), one of the most outstanding Estonian artists of the 20th century - Adamson-Eric Museum;
  • National romanticism of an Estonian artist of the first generation, Kristjan Raud (1865–1943) - Kristjan Raud House Museum.

All branches of the Art Museum of Estonia also organise temporary exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, conferences, meetings with artists, concerts, theatre performances and movie screenings. Museum also publishes exhibition catalogues and art-related books.
