Kumu Art Museum
Kumu Art Museum is the first purpose-built art museum in Estonia. Opened in February 2006, the museum has become a popular place among both locals and tourists – during the first year, over 200 000 visitors came to marvel at the art exhibitions and the unique architecture of the building. The museum is located on the limestone bank of Lasnamägi next to historical the Kadriorg Park. Residence of the President of the Republic of Estonia and Kadriorg Palace, which is also part of the Art Museum of Estonia, lie in the vicinity of the museum.
Kumu is a multifunctional museum that aims to appeal simultaneously to a diversity of audiences – from highly educated to working class, to older and younger generations, local public and tourists, school children and their teachers, from art novice to professional. The exhibitions concentrate on the uniqueness of Estonian art and its connections with other art cultures of the region. Kumu is aware of its role as a catalyst for both social and cultural debate.
Exhibition halls at Kumu feature displays of classics of Estonian art from the 18th century until the end of Second World War, as well as Estonian art from the second half of the 20th century. In addition to permanent exhibitions Kumu also displays contemporary art from Estonia and the rest of the world. Kumu meets all the international requirements for art museums which allows to bring more valuable artworks from abroad to Estonia.
